Als Workaround hab ich schnell was zusammengehackt. Ist im Wesentlichen die function image_resize_dimensions() aus media.php .
Aber ich musste feststellen, dass auch in function wp_constrain_dimensions() höhere Werte als das Original für width und height nicht beachtet werden :( ...

Möchte man dann noch weiter bearbeiten (erneuter Klick auf "Bild bearbeiten"), wird leider das Originalbild zum Bearbeiten angeboten, nicht das hochskalierte ... das wird mir dann aber doch zu blöd, da scheint mir noch einiges anderes verkorkst in Wordpress Bilder bearbeiten ...
